Hazrat Shah Ali Baghdadi (R.A.), popularly known as Shah Ali Hujur, was a highly influential and renowned Sufi saint and Islamic preacher in Bengal. His shrine (Mazar Sharif), located in Mirpur, Dhaka, has been a sacred spiritual hub for devotees and general people for centuries.

Here is his detailed biography and the history of his mission to spread Islam:

Lineage and Renunciation of Royal Life

Hazrat Shah Ali (R.A.) was born in Baghdad, the capital of present-day Iraq. He belonged to the royal family of the then Sultan or ruler of Baghdad. Despite having access to immense wealth, power, and all the luxuries of royal life, his heart was drawn toward spirituality and the devotion of Allah from early childhood. Eventually, he renounced his royal garments, left the throne, and embraced the path of Sufism, leaving Baghdad as a dervish to spread the message of Islam.

Arrival in the Indian Subcontinent and Spiritual Training

After leaving Baghdad, he first arrived in Delhi, India, which was a major center for Sufi saints at the time. There, he came under the spiritual guidance and companionship of the successors of the famous 'Chishtia' order, particularly the lineage of Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya (R.A.). He spent a significant amount of time in Delhi performing rigorous spiritual practices (Riyazat) and was eventually granted the spiritual title of 'Khilafat'. Following the instructions of his spiritual master (Murshid), he set out for East Bengal (present-day Bangladesh) to preach Islam.

Arrival in Bengal and Settlement in Mirpur

When he arrived in Bengal during the Sultanate period, the area around Dhaka was largely covered in deep forests and was highly inaccessible. He chose the remote and quiet area of Mirpur as his base, finding it ideal for spiritual meditation and isolation.

Here, he built a small mosque and a Khanqah (spiritual sanctuary). As word of his honesty, gentle behavior, simple lifestyle, and spiritual miracles spread, the local people began flocking to him in large numbers and embraced Islam.

The Final Chilla and Historical Disappearance

The most miraculous and widely discussed event of Shah Ali Hujur’s life occurred right before his passing:

The 40-Day Chilla: To immerse himself completely in the remembrance of Allah, he entered a closed room for a 40-day Chilla (continuous, uninterrupted prayer and meditation).

Strict Instruction: Before entering the room, he strictly instructed his followers and disciples: "Under no circumstances should the door of this room be opened for the next 40 days, no matter what kind of sound comes from inside."

The Opening of the Door: On the 39th day of the Chilla, a loud boiling sound—resembling water boiling inside a massive cauldron—and other unusual noises began emanating from the room. The disciples waiting outside grew extremely anxious and panicked, fearing for his safety. Out of overwhelming concern, they broke the rule and opened the door on the 39th day.

Spiritual Absorption (Fana): Upon opening the door, the disciples found that his physical body was no longer there. He had completely dissolved (Fana-fillah) into the divine light and love of Allah. Because the rule of the Chilla was broken, he vanished from the physical world on the 39th day.

The Mazar Sharif and His Legacy

The Mazar Sharif (shrine) was built exactly where the room of his final Chilla stood. It is located in present-day Mirpur-1, Dhaka.

Historical Importance: During the Mughal era, around 1680 AD under the reign of Subahdar Shah Shuja, a beautiful royal mosque was rebuilt adjacent to the shrine, which still stands today as a testament to Mughal architecture.

Naming of the Area: As a mark of respect for this great saint, one of the largest areas and police jurisdictions in Dhaka is named "Mirpur Shah Ali Thana". Additionally, the Shah Ali Baghdadi Eidgah, Shah Ali College, and the main road of the area, 'Shah Ali Avenue', are named after him.

Every day, thousands of people visit his shrine seeking spiritual peace and blessings. His lifelong sacrifice and devotion have secured him an immortal place in the history of Bengal.
